Capsular release

A Capsular release is often undertaken to help resolve a frozen shoulder. It may also be used for causes of a stiff shoulder.
In principle it involves 3 small arthroscopic scars, under direct vision all the contracted tissue and scar tissue is released.
A nerve at the bottom of the shoulder (axillary nerve) limits the extent of the release. The capsular release is then followed by a gentle manipulation.

It is very important to get the shoulder moving immediately after the surgery to prevent it scarring down and stiffening up. Although it is only 3 little cuts around the shoulder a lot of work gets done inside. Often a pain pump is inserted into the subacromial space and left in place for 48 hours after the surgery to allow for intensive physiotherapy.
